What is Key Publications?

Key Publications began under another title, called Vicious Writers. The name was officially changed in October, 2009. What began in 2008 as a small group of writers on another website quickly grew to enormous proportions after it was proposed that writers could, indeed, help other writers to become better writers. The idea spread quickly, and after many changes, Key Publications finally settled at Key Publications Network. Today, Key Publications Network stands as one of the best online writing communities on the web.

Who owns Key Publications?

Key Publications, Key Publications Network, and Key Publications Magazine is owned and operated by Damian Gray. You may contact Damian either through the Key Publications Network, or via email at dgray@keypub.net.

How do I post my work at KPN? Step-by-step instructions

If you’ve ever belonged to another online social community that incorporates blogs (MySpace, etc), then you can post your work at KPN. But, there are still a few differences. At the top of the KPN website you will see a menu with various links to different areas of the website. One of the linked tabs reads “Write Something!” Clicking on this tab will immediately open your blog editor.

  • How to paste from a word processing program (MS Word, etc.)?

If you’re like most people, you undoubtedly write your stories or poetry in a word processing program before pasting them into your blog editor to be shared with the world. When you are finished with your work, just select the entire piece (ctrl+a), then copy the text (ctrl+c). Then, once the text is copied, open you blog editor, place your cursor in the editing field, and paste (ctrl+v).

  • MS Word Format Clean-up

Although you can’t see it, Microsoft Word places all kinds of little items in your text. They call it formatting; bloggers call it a major pain. The reason it’s a pain is because these little bits of information tend to play havoc with most blogging systems. Luckily for you, however, the KPN blog editor comes complete with its own code eraser. On your blog editor’s toolbar, you’ll see a little icon on the right side that looks like a paint brush. To remove the codes set by MS Word, simply highlight your entire text and click on this icon.

  • Tagging Your Blog Post

At the bottom of your blog edityor you will see an area marked “Tag”. Tagging is a way for other KPN members to easily look up your blog based upon a keyword. This keyword can be anything from UFOs to Bigfoot to Bozo’s the Clown; essentially, anything that you think will help someone else find your work quickly. Each tag keyword that you place in this box needs to be separated by a comma.

  • Pending Blogs

Whenever you post a blog at KPN, it is automatically approved for publication on the website. But, this decision remains completely in your hands. You can either publish the blog immediately, or you can choose to leave it as a draft until such time as you want to show it to the rest of the KPN members. By default, this option is set to “Published” but you can easily change it to “Draft” by choosing the setting from the drop-down menu.

  • Can other members comment on my blog?

Again, this is one of those things that we leave up to the author. But, remember that one of the biggest reasons people join KPN is to get the great feedback offered from the other members. This setting is set to “yes” by default, but you can always change it to “no”.

  • Submit to Public Magazine?

This is by far one of the most confusing items for new KPN members. As you know, Key Publications issues a member-driven magazine at the beginning of each month. Clicking “yes” on the “Submit to Public Magazine” button does not submit your work for our magazine. Clicking yes to this option will only make your work immediately viewable in the “Review This!” area of the site. Publishing your work in the “Review This!” area is a great way to receive immediate feedback from the other members. If you want to get some good critique on your work, this is the way to do it.

  • Submitting your work to KeyPub magazine

So, if you can’t submit your work to KeyPub magazine by way of simply clicking on the “yes” button, then how do you do it? Well, first publish your blog. Then, click to view your published blog and copy the full URL (the address in your browser). Then send Damian a message with the full URL, and let him know that you would like this work to be considered for our monthly publication. He will then read your work and let you know that it is being considered for publication in the magazine.

  • Magazine Category

When you click on this drop-down menu, you will see a listing of different genres. This is much like a tagging system, but it is on a much more general basis; humor, fantasy, horror, etc, and it is strictly used within the confines of the “Review This!” section.

Forums

  • Where are the forums located?

On the menu bar at the top of your screen you will see a drop-down menu titled “Get Involved!” among those listed on the drop-down menu is the Forums link. Click that and you will be whisked away to our famous forums home. This displays all our forum categories, but please remember that the groups have their own forums. Those forums can be found at the individual group home pages.

  • Reading, creating and responding to forum topics
    • To read the forum topics, just click on a category of your interest. You will then see a listing of topics in that category.
    •  To create a topic click the tab at the top of the category, which reads “Create a Topic”. Please make sure that you’re in the right category before you create a new topic. In other words if you want to create a topic that concerns publishing, be sure that you are in the publishing category.
    •  To respond to a topic simply scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find a reply editing box. Alternatively, you can click on the “Reply” button at the top of the topic.
  • Quote to Topic and Quote buttons – what’s the difference?
    • The Quote to Topic button creates an off-shoot of the same topic. It’s like creating a whole new topic based upon the original toic. We strongly advise that you do not use this button as it tends to create confusion.
    • The Quote button quotes that particular member’s response to the topic in your own response.

How do I submit my work to Key Publications Magazine?

First, publish your blog. Then, click to view your published blog and copy the URL (the address in your browser). Then send Damian a message with the full URL and let him know that you would like this work to be considered for our monthly publication. He will then read your work and let you know that it is being considered for publication in the magazine.

How often is Key Publications Magazine published?

The Key Publications Magazine (often referred to as KeyPubMag) is published at the beginning of each month, usually on the first of the month.

Can anyone be published in Key Publications Magazine?

Although the work featured in KeyPubMag is freely available to read by anyone on the Internet, its content is strictly drawn from the members of KPN. You must be at least eighteen years of age to be published in the KeyPubMag. Any questions about this rule may directed to Damian at KPN.

Groups

  • Why should I join a KPN Group?
    • The KPN groups are lead by people that specialize in each genre. For instance, if you happen to be a poet, and would like to focus your interests in poetry workshops, contests and challenges, then the Poet’s Perch is the place for you. Each week, your group leader will send a group-wide newsletter to keep you up-to-date on the recent group activities. You will receive these weekly newsletters directly in your message box.
  • Can I create my own group?
    • Short answer: No.
    • Long answer: If you’ve ever been a member of another online writer’s social community, you’ve no doubt seen a veritable plethora of groups consisting of one, two or three members. These groups, although highly specialized in a particular area of writing, are fairly useless as a group and tend to sit inactive on the site. This spends site bandwidth, which causes the site’s server to slow down. To prevent this from happening KPN has decided to create eight genre-based groups, which focus on the overall genre. In other words, let’s say that you write thrillers. Although the Corridor of Chills group may seem from its title to be focused upon horror and mystery, it also encompasses thrillers. The same would go for the Young Adult group, Y.A.W.R! (Young Adult Writers Rock!). If you write children’s stories, Y.A.W.R! would be the group for you.

Leaving Reviews: KPN Member Expectations

When leaving reviews, always keep the KPN philosophy in mind:

“Facilitating the excellence in others is the Key to unlocking our own. Therefore it is only by way of helping other writers that we become better writers.”

The writers that join KPN sometimes post for vanity purposes (to show off their incredible talent). We’ve all been particularly proud of at least one or two pieces, and there’s nothing wrong with doing so. Usually, however, the authors post because they are looking for feedback on the work itself. They are not necessarily looking for short raves that do nothing for the progress of their work. “Hey! That was really great!” or “Good write, but it needs work” never helps the writer grow. When you leave a comment for the author, let him or her know what you truly thought about the piece. If you enjoyed it, of course you’ll want to say that you liked it, and every author loves to hear that their work moved another person. But, if you find things that you might change in the story or poem, then this may be something that the author had overlooked. Pointing out problems or errors in a writing community should never be taken as a personal slant against the author. It is simply a matter of helping the author grow to his or her full potential. With this in mind, think about how you would want someone to break this kind of news to you. Positive critique is the key to unlocking the doors to growth and success.

Sometimes you may find that an author’s work has offended you in some way. If this is the case, please do not confront the author directly. Contact Damian and action will be taken from there. Confronting the author about written offenses tends to create havoc and disruption amongst a social community, and it also embarrasses and ostracizes the offending author. Sometimes the author may not have even realized the faux pas when posting the work, so blasting the author does nothing other than create more problems.

What are the age requirements to be a member of Key Publications Network?

You must be at least thirteen years of age to join the Key Publications Network. You must be at least eighteen years of age to publish your work in the KeyPubMag.

Posting erotica and adult oriented content

KPN allows the posting of erotica and adult-oriented literature. However, this literature must be in good taste and cannot reflect sexual deviancy of any sort. KPN does not allow the posting or uploading of erotic and adult-oriented pictures or artwork. Because the site allows for members under the age of eighteen, we ask that any written material, whether in the form of erotica, graphic representation (e.g., blood and gore), or graphic and offensive language be forewarned in the posting at the top of the posted material; e.g. “Warning: This material is intended for mature readers.”

What is ViNoWriMo?

Vicious Novel Writing Month, or ViNoWriMo, is an annual site-wide competition that takes place during the month of January. The competition is loosely based upon the National Novel Writing Month, which takes place every November. The object of the competition is to write a 50,000-word novel within a period of one month and the novel must be based upon topics suggested by the KPN members. The final topic is then chosen at random. The final topic is revealed on New Year’s Eve and the contestants must complete and submit their novels by January 31st.

Two winning novels are chosen from the final submissions. The Grand Prize is a beautiful crystal trophy and the opportunity to edit and publish the novel with Key Publications. 1st Place receives a smaller version of the same trophy with the opportunity to edit and publish with Key Publications.

ViNoWriMo is a tough competition. It’s really all about survival. But, our members look forward to the annual event because it is so much fun!
